TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint disorder is a disorder of the joint that allows the jaw to open and close. This disorder often causes pain and pressure in the joint and surrounding areas like the ear or cheek. It can also cause the joint to lock or pop.
Often, wisdom teeth can cause similar symptoms as TMJ disorder. Extraction of the wisdom teeth is usually the first treatment for TMJ disorder.
Another treatment for TMJ disorder is a TMJ splint or night guard. This is a device that is worn in the mouth, and decreases the pressure on the jaw joint.
